7 Things Not to Bring to UC Davis

UC Davis, what not to bring

You may see so many “Official Packing Lists at UC Davis”, or “Things You Can’t Forget to Bring” articles just about everywhere, but what about the things that you can’t, or shouldn’t bring at UC Davis, or just aren’t worth it? Here are 7 things not to bring to UC Davis.

1. Pets (except fish)

I know, one of the hardest things about the college transition is leaving your beloved pets at home (pro tip: request regular pictures of your cats and dogs from home). It’s one of the worst parts. But unfortunately, those kind of pets aren’t allowed in the dorms at UC Davis, though this year you may see one or two service dogs, or the dogs that are part of the puppy raising club! You might want to consider getting a fish, but be prepared for it to die, especially if you win it at first night. (RIP Milo).

2. Your entire wardrobe.

Let’s be honest, you’re going to be wearing the same pairs of leggings/athletic shorts everyday, paired with the same 5 T-shirts. I maybe put on jeans 3 times this year. Don’t take up the space. You will probably also buy some UC Davis apparels when you arrive on campus.

3. Small book shelf and Desk lamp

There is already a small book shelf and a desk lamp in the residence hall room at UC Davis. Not worth the money or the space in the already-packed car.

4. Throw pillows.

They’ll just end up on the floor.

5. A bunch of chairs.

Dorm rooms are small. That’s a fact. With desk chairs and a bed, trust me, there are enough places to sit already. If you want to splurge on something to sit on, I recommend one of those storage ottomans, because they slide right under your desk drawers until you need it.

6. A whole pharmacy worth of medicine.

Unless you take them regularly when you’re at home, or the first thing you turn to when you don’t feel good, you won’t need them while you’re at school. If you change your mind, you can run to the UC Davis Medical Center.

7. A negative attitude.

This might sound so very cheesy, but it’s the truth. Going into college can be a scary thing for most people, but if you go in thinking you’re going to fail, you just might. It’s hard to know what to expect, but if you keep an open mind, anything can happen,

Packing for college can be super stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. I’d recommend the Campus Checklist on the UC Davis website to remember all the things that you’d typically forget, but don’t be tempted to bring certain things that aren’t worth the money or the space.
